Who SCC Is and What We Do
-
Stafford Creative + Co. is a design-led event production collective based in Oakland, California. We produce private celebrations, corporate events, branded events, and selective gatherings for clients across the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond. SCC is Black-owned, woman-owned, and has been operating for over fifteen years. Our collective model means every project is built around a curated team assembled for that specific event, not a fixed roster applied to every engagement.
-
It means creative direction comes first, before logistics, before vendor selection, before floor plans. We start with the story: who the event is for, what it should feel like, what it should mean to the people in the room. Every decision that follows serves that answer. The result is work that feels designed rather than assembled, events where the elements belong together because they were chosen with a through-line, not just a checklist.
-
A collective is a curated network of specialists — designers, producers, artisans, food and beverage specialists, collaborators- brought together around a shared standard of work. At SCC, we build the right team for each project rather than maintaining a fixed agency roster. It means the people on your event are there because they're exactly right for it. You get attention and genuine expertise without the overhead of a large agency structure.
-
Most event companies start with logistics and layer creative on top. We start with creative direction and build the logistics around it. That shift changes everything, the atmosphere, the coherence, the way the event feels to the people in the room. We also lead with a point of view rather than a service menu. Clients who work with us get a genuine creative partner, not a coordinator with a vendor list. And because we care deeply about culture, access, and the kind of impact a gathering can have on the people inside it, we bring a different set of questions to the table from the start.
-
Both — and the relationship between them is the point. Creative direction shapes the vision; production is how that vision becomes real. We offer full-service engagements that cover both from concept through execution, and we also offer creative direction as a standalone service for clients who have production support in place and need a design-focused lead. The scope depends on where you are and what you need — we'll figure that out together in the first conversation.
who we work with
-
We work with private clients, companies, and brands who see their events as more than occasions — as opportunities to create something that actually matters. Clients who value unconventional thinking, who care about cultural resonance, and who understand that real impact in a room comes from intention, not just execution. For private clients, that usually means someone who starts with a feeling rather than a format. For corporate clients and brands, it means organizations who want their events to reflect genuine values, and who understand that art, culture, and access aren't afterthoughts; they're what make a gathering worth attending.
-
We're selective by design, not because we're precious about it, but because our best work happens when there's genuine creative alignment between us and the client. We don't take on high-volume, template-driven engagements where the goal is replication rather than intention. Where we do our best work is when creative direction is part of the ask, when there's room to ask questions, challenge assumptions, and shape the experience from the ground up. Production-only engagements aren't off the table, but they're considered case by case. We'll tell you honestly and help point you toward someone who's a better match.
-
Yes. And some of our most considered work happens at smaller scale. Intimate dinners, private celebrations, brand gatherings of twenty to sixty people where every detail is felt rather than just seen. The same is true on the corporate side: an executive dinner or a small-format brand event requires more precision than a large production, not less. We enjoy that kind of work. Smaller doesn't mean simpler — it means the creative direction has to be exactly right.
-
Yes. We're based in Oakland and serve the Bay Area as our primary market. We produce events nationally and internationally for clients who want SCC's creative direction regardless of location. Destination engagements are scoped individually. Travel and accommodation are billed at cost.
how it works
-
It's a conversation, not a pitch. We want to understand what you're building, why it matters, and what success looks like to you. We'll ask about the feeling you're after before we ask about the format. From there, we can tell you whether we're the right fit and what a scope of work might look like. There's no obligation, just a real exchange to figure out if this makes sense.
-
It starts with story discovery, a deep-dive conversation about who you are, what this event is for, and what you want the people in the room to feel. From there, we develop a creative framework: the aesthetic direction, the atmosphere, the arc of the experience. That framework guides every decision that follows: venue, vendors, design, the progression of the evening. Once the creative foundation is set, we move into production: sourcing, coordination, logistics, and on-site management. The creative direction and the production work together, not in sequence. That's what makes the result feel coherent rather than assembled.
-
We handle vendor sourcing as part of every full-service engagement. We have a network of designers, florists, F&B partners, photographers, AV specialists, and other collaborators we trust and have worked with — people whose standards align with ours. We don't apply the same vendor list to every project; we source for the specific event, the aesthetic, and the client. If you're coming to us for creative direction only, we can provide vendor guidance and recommendations as part of that scope.
-
Both. Lea serves as creative director on every SCC engagement, she leads the story discovery process, shapes the creative framework, and maintains the design vision through execution. The broader collective handles production, logistics, and specialist work. You have a direct relationship with the creative lead and the full capability of the team behind it.
-
For full-service private events and weddings, eight to fourteen months is ideal — it gives us time to do the creative work properly. For corporate events, three to six months depending on scale. That said, we've worked on shorter timelines when the scope allows. Reach out with your date and we'll tell you honestly what's possible.
investment
-
Every engagement is different, and we don't believe in packaging work that should be personal. What you invest with SCC depends on fit, scope, scale, number of guests, and location- factors we can only understand through a real conversation about your specific event. What we can tell you is that we're always transparent about investment before anything is agreed to. No surprises, no ambiguity. The first step is a conversation; from there, we'll put together a proposal that reflects what your project actually needs.
-
Our fee covers creative direction, design, and production management — the thinking, the vision, and the coordination that brings it all together. Vendor costs — florals, catering, rentals, AV, photography, and other hard costs — are separate and billed at cost plus a coordination fee. We'll account for all of it clearly in your proposal so you have a complete picture before any decisions are made.
-
Yes. Creative direction is available as a standalone service — designed for clients with existing planning partners or in-house teams who want SCC's creative lead on the vision and design side. Monthly retainers are also available for brands or clients who want ongoing creative direction. Scope and investment for both are determined in conversation.
one more thing
-
Honest answer: it feels like working with a team that meets you where you are. We listen first. We invest time in understanding how you live, how you/your organization operates, what already feels true to you, and we use that as the foundation for everything we build together. The result is creative solutions that feel native to who you are, not imposed from the outside. Clear communication and honest guidance are part of how we work at every stage. We're drawn to work that's unconventional, that has cultural weight, that creates genuine access to something people don't usually get to experience. Collaborative without being chaotic, opinionated without being rigid. You'll be heard, and you'll also be challenged when a better idea is on the table. That's the exchange we're after.
